Can a child suddenly develop an allergy to our cat whom we have had for a year?
My 4 year old daughter has been sneezing and has had red,itchy, swollen eyes for the past couple of days. I am wondering if she is allergic to our family cat. We have had Tango for a year now and she never had a problem up until a few days ago. We have an appt at the pediatrician on Monday. I have been giving her Benadryl which does seem to help. Is it possible she is suddenly developing an allergy to the cat? Thanks for your input.

Allergies can develop at any time at any age. Studies have actually shown that children raised without any pets actually develop more allergies later on. Hopefully your daughter just has a cold!
Allergies can occur at any time. The good news is there are ways to help your daughter without having to get rid of the cat.
Yes I grew up with 2 and now I can't get near them. Yu can put her on claritan or zyrtec . Sometimes you can out grow them again. IT could also be the change of season my daughter is 5 and she has some of your daughters symptoms .

It is entirely possible for your daughter to have developed this allergy. Is the cat allowed on the furniture where your daughter plays? If so, the dander from your cat may be what's making your little girl have those symptoms. Benadryl is a great thing to have when you or your child has an allergic reaction. Hope the doctor can discern for certain what's really going on. Hope your daughter feels better soon!
Have you changed your fabric softener, shampoo, soap, laundry detergent or any other perfumed items used in the house?
Does your city do night spraying for gypsy moths, mosquitoes or any other insect?
Both those would be my first thoughts before allergies to the current pets. Cities usually list their spraying times in the newspaper but most people don't see it. I can ALWAYS tell when ours does it between 3am and 5am, I wake up coughting and my eyes are burning from it - the stuff gets inside the house through windows, chimney, and any other air flow area. They're basically spraying pesticides, at a time when 99% of the city is indoors.
